It’s that time of year again. Sure, our country and the planet has been through an uncertain year. But, one thing I continue to see in all of our communities is people stepping up. Moreover, I believe that Americans are some of the most generous people in the world. And it’s demonstrated by the fact that we have a deep philanthropic tradition. In 2019 alone, Americans donated more than $449 billion to charitable causes. That’s awesome. In case you still haven’t donated this year, let’s look at my list of the best charities to donate to in 2020.

With about 1.5 million nonprofit groups and charities in the U.S., there are just many groups out there doing good for their communities. However, this list only represents organizations that caught my eye during the year. Again, many great groups across our country and worldwide do good stuff for our people and humanity as a whole. Nevertheless, these organizations need year-end fundraising revenue. So, let’s dive in and look at where you could give a contribution.

1. Donate to Direct Relief

Charity Navigator considers Direct Relief, one of the top charities. Direct Relief is impressive, so I think of it as one of the best charities to donate to in 2020. This global group operates out 80 countries and across the entire U.S. They provide humanitarian relief, and we know lots of people need support in our communities right now. For instance, they have a Covid-19 relief program getting the medical gear for front-line workers. There are several ways to support the fantastic work of Direct Relief. You could donate online, become a sustaining donor, or start a peer-to-peer fundraiser.

2. Consider Giving to Hope for the Warriors

Besides the fact Americans care about their people, we also care about our military warriors and their families. Therefore, another great nonprofit to give to is Hope for Warriors. This group supports soldiers and servicemen and women wounded in service to our country and their families. Moreover, they help families of service people killed in action. With their motto, ‘No sacrifice forgotten, nor need unmet,’ this group has programs ranging from clinical health and wellness to transition services and sports and recreation. Get involved with this group in their Circle of Hope, volunteering, or through the community.

3. Give to the Environment and One Tree Planted

Since 2014, One Tree Planted has supported the environment. As we know from science class in school, the planet needs trees to take carbon and give us oxygen. So, one of the things the world needs is more trees, primarily because of deforestation. One Tree Planted works on protecting biodiversity, making a better climate for all living things, and works against deforestation. If this sounds like an organization that’s up your alley, think about Becoming a Tree Ambassador. You could also check out their Million Tree Challenge or donate as an individual or business.

4. Support the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Unfortunately, suicide is the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the CDC. Moreover, rates continue to climb, and that’s why the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is on the list of the best charities to donate to in 2020. As the organization says, ‘Suicide is not inevitable for anyone.’ But for any of us to help someone in need, we all have to inform ourselves about the risk factors. If you want to donate to this organization or get involved, consider participating by becoming a volunteer, sharing your story, or making a donation. And, should you find yourself in crisis, talk to someone now.

5. Donate to End Violence Against Women with V-Day

Because of stay-at-home orders and lock-downs worldwide, many women and girls found themselves locked in their homes with their abusers. V-Day is a global organization working in 81 countries worldwide to see that violence against women and girls ends once and for all. V-Day offers grants for programs and supports local anti-violence groups. If this organization is of interest to you, consider organizing in your community. Of course, you could follow the organization on social media and make a charitable donation.

As I close out this list of social good groups, again, I know there are so many in our communities. And with this, my final post of 2020, I want to wish you and your family peace and health for the holiday season. Sure, it’s been a challenging year, but let’s remember that perspective, and together we could make all the difference. We each have the power to make a difference in our lives and that of others. All we have to do is step up to meet the opportunity to help.
