7059177_mSo, we’re at the beginning of a New Year. By now, you may have already failed at your resolutions.


There’s hope.

It doesn’t matter who you are. Most people want to improve on some aspect of their life. Let me tell you why most people fail in the decisions to do something new in January. They don’t back it up.

In other words, people make decisions, resolutions and statements that they’ll be changing their job, life, home or fitness. The problem comes that most people don’t back that up with the steps to ensure success.

For any goal, once you get into the day to day and the challenges that inevitably come up, can seem further and further away. It can easily feel like one step forward and two steps back.

That doesn’t have to be the case. There are a few things you can do to help ensure your success:

  • Get Off the Couch – You need to do this every day, physically, emotionally and mentally. Nothing’s going to come to you. So, if you’re looking to achieve a certain goal, you simply can’t be lazy about it. It takes work. And, the bigger the goal, the greater the amount of energy you’ll have to spend.
  • Create Milestones – To get from point A to Z there are a lot of steps in between. To stay motivated, you have to see success. But, you may not have yet achieved your goal. So, how do you gain some success to keep up the momentum? You create milestones along the way. You take it in small pieces. You look to get from A to B and then C. You want to think big, but act in small ways to get there. Many people give up; once they face challenges they simply put their hands in the air. It’s because they’re not seeing any success. Milestones help you achieve progress and momentum on the way to your ultimate goal.
  • Put Up a Wall – At the first or second instance of push back from people, you don’t want to be swayed. Because most people would rather stay safe than take risk, they will be very quick to say what you’re doing is wrong. They’ll tell you you’re crazy or “not being realistic.” If you’ve done your due diligence and you think you can do it, you can do it. This is when you need to put up the wall. You can hear what people are saying to you, but you don’t need to listen to them.
  • Be Consistent and Persevere – Consistency is critically important. Some days will be great and full of energy. Some days you’ll barely know what hit you. And other days won’t make any sense. The point is that no matter what happens, you have to keep going. Even if you’re pushed all the way back to square one, you need to get up again and move forward. People don’t fail because they try. That’s not true failure. They fail because they give up, or don’t try at all. The most successful leaders in business, sports, politics or any field in life all tasted setbacks. That’s where the learning comes from. You need to stay the course. Each. And. Every. Day. Period.

It’s another year. Look in the mirror. Is where you stand where you want to be? Is your life what you want it to be? If that’s the case – great! Enjoy it and congratulations. But, if you want something more that will change your life or that of your family, here’s my simple formula: Get Off the Couch!
