It’s that time of year again where millions of people are grateful for what they have in their lives. When people become reflective, they also think about the broader world and making a difference. Philanthropic giving to charitable causes is an essential aspect of the holiday season, which kicks-off with Giving Tuesday.
In addition to individuals, businesses and corporations around the world also understand that taking a leadership role in philanthropy is an excellent opportunity for them to demonstrate corporate social responsibility. The public cares about patronizing companies that are socially responsible.
In what has become an annual tradition, I’d like to feature a few of the best charities for 2018 where you can consider giving a gift whether you’re an individual, entrepreneur or work at a company.
Communities in Schools: This particular organization works within the schools creating relationships while they empower students. The reason why they do it is that as 1 in 5 children in the U.S. lives in poverty, the organization seeks to bring its programs to the one place where all children should be, which is a classroom in a school.
Seacology: We have recently read about the devastation that is already happening to the environment because of climate change. The oceans and seas are an integral part of our environmental healing if we have any chance of reversing course. The mission of this organization is to protect the threatened habitats of precious islands around the world at risk of disappearing or having their ecosystems destroyed.
Task Force Global Health: Healthcare is a human right, and it shouldn’t be a privilege. Every day people living in poverty suffer immeasurable consequences to their health from the lack of high-quality care. This organization works around the globe looking to improve the outcomes for people living in poverty. Their singular goal is “Healthy, productive lives for all.”
Prevent Child Abuse America: No child should ever suffer any abuse. I think we all agree on that premise. Consumer Reports has named Prevent Child Abuse America one of the two best organizations for children in the nation. Learn how you can play a role in supporting the welfare of all children in your community and across the U.S.
Committee to Protect Journalists: No democracy can survive without the Fourth Estate. Unfortunately, journalists around the world are being killed for just doing their jobs. In 2018, as of this writing, 48 journalists were killed, 262 were imprisoned, and 59 are missing, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
Ovarian Cancer Alliance: Unfortunately, it seems as if most people know someone who has cancer, is in remission or has died from it. Although a lot of money is invested, we have not been able to find the cures that will eradicate all of the mutations of this dreaded disease. Also, women’s health has historically had lower funding and research than that for men. Ovarian Cancer Alliance is one of the best organizations researching for a cure, developing treatments and seeking breakthroughs on this particular disease.
During this season, I’m always seeking excellent charities so I can help spread the word about the work they do. If you happen to know an organization that has demonstrated significant impact in your community, send my team an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, and perhaps I’ll have the chance to feature it before the end of the year.
